Types of Teeth Whitening
Dr. Shiewitz offers both in-office bleaching and home bleaching via custom fit trays. The best option for achieving maximal results is to do in-office bleaching followed by two weeks of home bleaching.
In-Office Bleaching: Opalescence® Boost
In-office bleaching with Opalescence® Boost requires a 90-minute appointment, with up to three 20-minute bleaching procedures during that time. A pre-treatment colour matching is done, as well as photography. This is repeated at the end of the procedure so you can see the noticeable difference immediately.
Opalescence® Boost contains potassium nitrate and fluoride. Both of these help minimize tooth sensitivity during and after treatment. Whitening and Sensitivity
Sometimes, bleaching can cause tooth sensitivity, particularly to cold. In such cases, bleaching is temporarily discontinued and a fluoride treatment or desensitizing regimen is recommended. Fluoride desensitizes the teeth. We also recommend desensitizing toothpastes such as Sensodyne.
When the sensitivity resolves, your whitening treatment can resume. However, Dr. Shiewitz suggests that after each additional bleaching session, an extra high fluoridated toothpaste be inserted into the custom trays and worn for 30 minutes to help prevent further sensitivity issues.
