Dental Implants
A dental implant is a metal post, usually made of titanium, that is surgically embedded into your jawbone to replace the root portion of a missing tooth. After a period of healing which allows the implant to fuse firmly with your jawbone, Dr. Shiewitz will create a replacement tooth to attach to the implant.
Dental implants can be used to replace one or more teeth. If you’re missing a single tooth, one implant and one replacement tooth will take care of your problem. If you’re missing several teeth in a row, a few carefully placed implants can support a permanent bridge. Similarly, if you have lost all your teeth, a full bridge can be permanently fixed in your mouth with a strategic number of implants. Alternatively, a full removable denture can be attached to implants for better support and retention but it can remain removable.
Dr. Shiewitz works with a periodontist or an oral surgeon who will place your implants. Dr. Shiewitz will then restore the implants according to the original plan, achieved by collaboration between you, your specialist, and Dr. Shiewitz.
An ideal candidate for dental implants:

- Has maintained good oral health
- Has healthy gums with no signs of gum disease

Your new dental implants should be treated just like natural teeth. They require brushing and flossing at least twice every day and regular checkups and cleanings with Dr. Shiewitz at our North York, ON dental office.
