Emergency Dental Care North York, ON
If you experience any type of facial injury, persistent pain, or swelling, it’s important to visit Dr. Sara Shiewitz Dentistry as soon as possible.
We do our best to welcome same-day patients with dental emergencies. If we are fully booked with other patients, patients with less serious issues are triaged by Dr. Shiewitz and our staff and scheduled for the soonest available appointment. Any serious emergency such as a dental infection, pain, or swelling will be seen the same day.
Broken Teeth/Broken Fillings/Cavities
The most common dental emergencies we see at our North York dental office are broken teeth and broken fillings. Often, teeth or fillings break because there is decay present. Decay weakens tooth structure and fillings. When decay gets too large, the tooth and/or filling will start to break down. Decay around a filling is called “recurrent decay.” The edges of the filling, known as the margins, are a weak spot that can allow cavity-causing bacteria to take hold and start the decay problem. This type of recurrent decay is extremely common.
Dental Infections
Dental infections are often caused by cavities that were not treated and got so big that the bacteria in the mouth were able to enter the root canal and into the bone around the tooth. These infections can be extremely painful and can cause local swelling, facial swelling, and fever. When left too long, referral to a hospital for emergency intravenous antibiotics may be necessary.
