Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry North York, ON

Sedation with nitrous oxide gas is a safe, popular, and effective option for patients at Dr. Sara Shiewitz Dentistry who experience mild to moderate dental anxiety, or for children who need extensive treatment.

Also known as conscious sedation or “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide does not put people to sleep like a general anesthetic. Nitrous oxide is very short acting. It leaves the body within a few minutes after stopping the administration, and people are fully conscious and able to leave unaccompanied, and even drive home.

Almost all patients can take advantage of the benefits of nitrous oxide sedation, though it is not available for those with chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD).

Receiving Dental Care with Nitrous Oxide

If you choose to receive nitrous oxide sedation during your dental procedure, we recommend the following:

  • Have a light, nutritious meal between two to three hours prior to the appointment time. It is best not to consume food two hours prior to the appointment time.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
  • If you wear contact lenses, please remove them, and wear glasses to the appointment.
  • Take all your regular medications on your usual schedule unless advised otherwise by Dr. Shiewitz.

The nitrous oxide delivery system provides a precise mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen gases. The gas is inhaled through a facemask and begins to work immediately. The level of sedation is monitored throughout the procedure to make sure you stay relaxed and free from discomfort. Once the dental procedure is complete, pure oxygen is administered, and recovery takes place within minutes.

Dr. Shiewitz and our team strive to ensure patient comfort with or without the use of sedation. If you have questions regarding the use of nitrous oxide for your dental care, please contact our North York dental office and a member of our staff will be more than happy to help.
