Periodontal Gum Disease Treatment
In general, gum disease can be caused by long-term exposure to plaque, harmful bacteria, and other materials left behind from eating. Infection in your gums can eventually lead to separation of the gums from the teeth, creating even greater opportunities for infection and decay. Dr. Sara Shiewitz offers treatment for gum disease in the form of scaling (deep cleaning) and root planing (polishing and smoothing of the tooth roots). Root Canal Treatment
Root canal therapy is a remarkable treatment for teeth with extensive decay and has a very high rate of success. It involves removing the diseased tissue to halt the spread of infection and restoring the healthy portion of the tooth. In fact, root canal therapy is designed to save a problem tooth; before the procedure was developed and gained acceptance, the only alternative for treating a diseased tooth was extraction.
Tooth Extractions
When restoration procedures such as root canal therapy, crowns, or fillings are not enough to save a tooth, it may need to be pulled, or extracted. Tooth extraction procedures today are far less painful than ever before, thanks to powerful anesthetics and sedatives. In many cases, a patient who has tooth pulled experiences little or no discomfort, and only minor bleeding.
