At Dr. Sara Shiewitz Dentistry, our dentistry team is dedicated to providing a strong foundation for great oral hygiene. Dr. Shiewitz and our professional staff are committed to ensuring our Toronto patients receive thorough care during their dental examinations and cleanings.
The Dental Examination
Your first visit at Dr. Sara Shiewitz Dentistry will include a complete, detailed examination, which includes examination of the neck, jaw joint, teeth, gums, and all soft tissues in the mouth. This will also include an oral cancer screening. During this initial dental examination, our staff may recommend a full mouth X-rays series, to ensure the health of your gums, teeth, and jaw. X-rays will not be required at every visit, and Dr. Shiewitz will discuss whether new X-rays will be needed.
A "recare" dental examination and cleaning are recommended typically twice-yearly for children and adults. During "recare" visits, patients receive a thorough examination of all the intraoral tissues, including their teeth, gums, tongue, jaw, cheeks, etc. This examination also includes an oral cancer screening. Dr. Shiewitz or one of our experienced dental hygienists will examine each tooth for cavities, plaque, tartar, and sign of other damage, such as chipping. An examination of your gums will detect if any gum disease is present or needs treatment. Your head, neck and jaw are examined to diagnose any possible issues with glands or joints, such as TMJ disorder. If necessary, Dr. Shiewitz may recommend additional X-rays, or a detailed periodontal inspection.
Comprehensive Dental Cleaning
After the comprehensive examination and evaluation, one of our knowledgeable dental hygienists will perform a thorough cleaning. Professional cleanings are recommended to prevent cavities, gum (periodontal) disease and identify any oral health issues as early as possible. A professional cleaning supplements the oral hygiene techniques (such as brushing and flossing) that you perform at home. Our hygienists may recommend cleanings every 9 months, every 6 months, or every 3 to 4 months, depending on the results of your examination.
A deep cleaning by one of our professional dental hygienists may include a polishing to remove stain and a fluoride treatment to prevent cavities.
