hand holding clear aligners on teeth, Invisalign North York, ON dentist

Invisalign clear aligners are a highly sought-after alternative to conventional metal braces, offering a discreet and effective solution for minor teeth misalignment. Invisalign has been used to straighten teeth since 1999 and is a very popular method due to how comfortable and convenient the whole process is for patients. Many of our North York, ON patients at Dr. Sara Shiewitz Dentistry are thrilled with the results that this type of procedure has produced for them.

The Invisalign treatment method utilizes custom-fitted, clear plastic aligners designed from a digital scan and computer model, which are worn sequentially for around 10 days each to slowly move the teeth. The gradual movement of teeth is essential during orthodontic treatment to prevent harm to the tooth root or surrounding bone.

Why Choose Invisalign Over Traditional Braces?

Invisalign aligners are practically invisible, making them a far more aesthetically pleasing option than traditional braces. The smooth plastic of the aligners also provides a greater level of comfort for the wearer than traditional braces, as there are no metal brackets or wires to irritate the mouth. Compared to traditional braces, which are adhered to your teeth for the duration of your treatment, Invisalign aligners are removable. This makes it much easier to brush and floss your teeth as plaque is harder to remove from around the metal brackets and wires of conventional braces.

Duration of Treatment

To begin, you will have a consultation with Dr. Shiewitz to determine whether you are a good candidate for this method. As part of this process, our North York dental staff will take x-rays and digital impressions of your mouth. If you are established as a candidate for Invisalign®, these x-rays and impressions will be utilized to create your treatment course which will show exact teeth movements throughout the process.

The duration of Invisalign treatment varies depending on the complexity of the malocclusion and the desired outcome, with simple cases taking only a few months and more complicated cases requiring two to three years. Adherence to the aligner-wearing regimen is crucial to achieve optimal results. Aligners should only be removed to eat, brush, and floss.

For simple cases of crowding, Dr. Shiewitz offers in-office treatment. However, more complex cases will require referral to an orthodontist. Patients are advised to maintain excellent oral hygiene practices to avoid any complications that could impede treatment progress. While the length of treatment time will vary between individuals, Dr. Shiewitz will give you an estimated date of completion according to your progress and results.

Monitoring Progress

Regular appointments at our North York dental office are essential to ensure that the teeth are moving correctly, with patients typically returning after every three sets of aligners. Each aligner is worn for around ten days before progressing to the next set. Strict compliance with the treatment plan is vital to achieve the desired outcome.
