Implant Supported Dentures

Implant Supported Dentures North York, ON

Implant-supported dentures are removable dentures (either complete or partial dentures) that attach to two or more implants for stability and retention. For people who cannot or choose not to go through more extensive and expensive implant restorative procedures, such as full-mouth restoration, implant-supported dentures offer a wonderful and cost effective solution.

Conventional Dentures vs. Implant-Supported Dentures

Conventional dentures, whether full or partial, have a tendency to move around in the mouth during use, such as during chewing or speaking. This a very common problem with full lower dentures.

When a denture is attached to implants, however, it is much more stable throughout the day. Specialized attachments are placed in the underside of the denture, and onto the implants. When the denture is placed in your mouth, it snaps onto the implants via these attachments.  The denture is removed before bedtime.

Implant-supported dentures are therefore preferred over conventional (non-implant supported) dentures. While both types are removable, the implant-supported dentures will not fall out when you are eating or talking. The presence of implants helps maintain the volume of bone in the jaw, which provides better stabilization for the denture. With conventional dentures, the bone will continue to shrink indefinitely so that as time goes on, conventional dentures get looser.

Implant-Supported Dentures at Dr. Sara Shiewitz Dentistry

Dr. Shiewitz works with a periodontist or an oral surgeon for implant placement surgery. All treatment is planned ahead of time in collaboration between these specialists and Dr. Shiewitz, so you can trust your care is in good hands.

Dr. Shiewitz takes several aspects into consideration when planning implant denture treatment: whether new dentures are being made, whether teeth are being extracted, and whether implants are already present or need to be placed.

When new dentures are planned, the dentures are fabricated either ahead of time or once the implants are healed and integrated. Impressions of the mouth and implants are taken. New dentures are fabricated by the dental laboratory and female attachment parts are embedded into the tissue side of the dentures. The male attachment part is attached to the implants and tightened into place. The dentures then snap into place.

Home Care

Care for implant-supported dentures is the same as for conventional dentures. A good antibacterial non-scratching cleanser is recommended, such a Fresh Cleanse by Polident. Dentures should be cleaned once daily with a designated toothbrush and the recommended cleaner. The attachments that are on the implants should be brushed with a toothbrush twice daily to remove dental plaque in order to avoid peri-implantitis.

Never wear dentures to bed at night! Doing so can result in a yeast infection on the tissues in the mouth that are covered by the dentures. It is also important to visit our North York, ON dental office for checkups and exams, as this will allow Dr. Shiewitz to monitor your gum and bone health, and ensure the proper fit of the implant dentures.

Stop worrying about falling and shifting dentures! Implant-supported dentures provide better stabilization and help maintain jawbone volume. Call Dr. Sara Shiewitz Dentistry in North York, ON at (416) 223-4181 to schedule a consultation!
